New York rapper Princess Nokia released a mixtape today entitled A Girl Cried Red, following her debut album 1992 Deluxe, released in September. She announced the mixtape on Instagram a few days ago, first dropping hints in a post with “I got a big surprise coming tomorrow” before announcing the mixtape drop on Friday the 13th. The date isn’t ironic either—the self described “emo mixtape” features a collection of songs with titles like “Morphine” and “Your Eyes Are Bleeding”. If you were a 90’s kid like Princess Nokia, and had a ‘emo music’ phase at one point in your life, this mixtape will feel all kinds of nostalgic.
Princess Nokia is a notorious musical shape shifter. From promoting her music in high school on Soundcloud and YouTube, to her debut album last year, she’s on people’s radar with her unique sound. 1992 Deluxe was embedded with hard-hitting lyrics over 90’s style beats. A Girl Cried Red is similar in that the beats and lyrics are in typical Princess Nokia-style, but imbued with an early 2000’s punk sound. This mixtape is proof that an artist like Princess Nokia can exist in both the hip-hop and punk genres.
In conjunction with the mixtape, she dropped a video for the song “Your Eyes Are Bleeding”. The video depicts her on tour, and feels like a window into the world of Destiny Frasqueri, the girl behind the music. Watch the video for “Your Eyes Are Bleeding” below.
