Proenza Schouler x Birkenstock Are a Match Made in Heaven
Proenza Schouler and Birkenstock team up to make the sandal of your dreams
Long gone are the days when Birkenstock sandals were deemed “uncool.” But here are the days we dread having to wear real shoes to work and events. The solution? A Proenza Schouler and Birkenstock collaboration.
Designed by Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez, the women’s wear brand Proenza Schouler is known for their leatherwork and modern, abstract designs. They first teamed up with Birkenstock in the spring of 2020 and were met with instant excitement. The Proenza Schouler x Birkenstock Collection 2 kept the same inspiration and utilitarian vibe and took it a step further.
The sandals include industrial contrast topstitching to highlight the design of the hook-and-loop closure, instead of Birkenstock’s typical hardware buckle. The sandals are made from calf leather and mesh together with athletic footwear and modern workwear.
Showcasing Proenza Schouler’s iconic color palettes, the sandals come in a range of cobalt blue, rustic luggage burgundy, and neutrals in black and ecru, meant to carry the wearer from late summer to fall.
“We are thrilled to expand on our collaboration with Birkenstock,” said McCollough and Hernandez in a joint statement. “Birkenstock and Proenza Schouler both share a common respect and admiration for the craftsmanship and detailed work that is integral to all of our products. We are excited to pick-up where we left off and expand on the collection with fresh colorways that feel very in the moment and true to our brand.”
American photographer Collier Schorr shot the campaign and New York native and singer-songwriter King Princess is the face of the collaboration. King Princess’s originality and artistic eccentricity is not unlike Proenza Schouler’s, making her an adept fit.
