Proenza Schouler x Birkenstock
The ultimate summer sandals.
In a smart trick, Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez of Proenza Schouler have released a six-sandal line in collaboration with Birkenstock – weaving a hardy sense of usefulness into the cool-girl urbanity that underscores their brand.
Birkenstock classics, the Arizona and Milano styles have received the Proenza-upgrade: now available in a specchio calf-leather, inspired by McCollough’s and Hernandez’s past and present collections, and offered in a polished black, white, ocher, and silver colorway. All are complete with a distinct, contrasting topstitch and a Velcro closure, sans those iconic metal buckles. The dialogue between Birkenstock and Proenza is organic; the parallels of a stripped-down sexiness and an off-duty functionality marry together well, nearly seamless. In fact, for their spring 2020 showing McCollough and Hernandez had models wear heels while holding Birkenstocks by their side, evoking those long sought after (and difficult to attain) “chic commuter vibes.” Their SS2020 collection luxuriated in utility and induced a sense of reality on the runway – one that’s often drowned in theatrics and buried in analogies. Their line put forth an unspoken truth: practicality is fashion’s friend.
That IRL sentiment, potent and authentic as it is, translates just as clear in an specchio calf strapped, ocher hued, leather-soled sandal – one that can be found exclusively at Net-a-Porter through March 20, and select retailers there afterward. As summer approaches and city-girls find refuge in cooler climates, a Proenza Birkenstock will be first packed – as all other options pale in comparison.
