Art Imitates Life in Rich Brian’s New Music Video

The rapper celebrates his Sundance Festival debut with a cheeky music video

Does life imitate art or does art imitate life? In the case of Brian Immanuel, more affectionately known as Rich Brian, the latter seems most applicable. The Indonesian rapper, who found viral fame in 2016 with the SoundCloud hit “Dat Stick,” made his acting debut this year in Jamojaya. The film debuted this past Sunday at Sundance Film Festival in Park City, UT.

The Justin Chon-directed film follows an aspiring rapper from Indonesia (played by Rich Brian) as he clashes with his manager-slash-father (Yayu Unru) in an attempt to expand his career in the United States. Jamojaya is the story of an artist caught between the commercial demands of the industry and the power struggle brought on by his father—a complex depiction of young stardom and those who may get left behind in the process. Immanuel, who is no stranger to the chaos of the music business, brings the role to life, testing his acting skills on one of the biggest screens in the industry.

In keeping with his music background, Immanuel will be celebrating his film debut with a new song aptly titled “Sundance Freestyle,” out today. The accompanying visual shows Immanuel taking over a mock press interview for the festival. Rather than sit and answer interviewer questions, he usurps the interview, making use of the air time to perform his own song–complete with backup dancers, LED lights, and streamer explosions. There’s even a blowup sun with the words “Sun Dancing” emblazoned across its core, presumably a nod to Immanuel’s premiere at the festival. Talk about a debut.
