Rick Owens Fall 2020

The designer offered highly exaggerated shoulders and sophisticated rubber for his latest collection.

The show took place at Paris’ Palais de Tokyo and saw models wearing a futuristic collection that was typical of Owens’ fashionable stark style. The runway was covered in mist as models took their steps.

Staying true to his aesthetic, the show featured a lot of black, charcoal, grey and flashes of white. There were moments of silver and green but the dominant colors were blue and a burnt red. Most of the looks featured super exaggerated shoulders, that were constructed high, almost armor-like. The dramatic shoulder was featured in dresses, coats, and jackets. Owens flirted with symmetry, showing a range of asymmetrical dresses. The dresses were paired with statement rubber boots. Some were thigh-high, others had chunky transparent heels, but all sat on top of metal-grate-like platforms. Other metal moments came from the jewelry, chunky cuffs in a brutalist style were seen with most looks. Models carried co-ord rubber gloves and wore reflective shades.

Owens offered a strong variation of jackets, we saw puffer, motorcycle, and cropped styles shown alongside capes. Some of the jackets were double-layered, with the outer constructed from white rubber. It played with transparency and questioned the idea of what fabrications can be luxe. The capes were created using the same techniques that are used to make puffer jackets. They were draped and wrapped around the body and fastened with a chunky silver chain.

Towards the end of the collection, Owens gave us an interesting take on pinstripe. He presented a geometric version that was used for the dresses and coats. After, he provided his version of sexy, with a black leather dress that was fastened at the side with apron-like ties.

In front row attendance sat GOT actor, Gwendolyn Christie, 90’s singer Usher, and Owens’ wife Michèle Lamy. Lamy showed up wearing her usual regalia but with a life-like replica of Rick’s head hanging from her chest. The avant-garde artist has often been credited as a source of Owens’ inspiration and work.
