Rihanna and LVMH To Shut Down Fenty Line

The luxury conglomerate is suspending the label only two years after its debut.

Sad news for Fenty aficionados everywhere: LVMH, the label’s parent company, is suspending the Rihanna-led ready-to-wear operations less than two years after its debut.

“Rihanna and LVMH have jointly made the decision to put on hold the ready-to-wear activity, based in Europe, pending better conditions,” the two parts said in a joint statement obtained by Bloomberg

The pandemic seems to be one of the main reasons behind the decision – travel restrictions made Rihanna’s job a little harder as Fenty is based in Europe while the star lives in California. There’s a bright side, though: according to the statement, the suspension isn’t definitive, meaning the brand could still come back in the future.

Meanwhile, Rihanna’s lingerie line, Savage X Fenty, just secured  $115 million in funding from L Catterton, a private equity fund supported by LVMH founder Bernard Arnault, which will power the chapter’s plans for growth and retail development. Fenty’s beauty and skincare lines will also carry on with operations.

A part of the Fenty team will reportedly remain at the label’s headquarters in Paris to help shutter things down. The website is expected to go off air in the next few weeks; Fenty’s Instagram page hasn’t posted since Jan. 1, 2021.

Fenty was the first LVMH brand headed by a Black woman and the first of the conglomerate’s labels to be built from scratch since 1987. Rihanna is reportedly “sad” over the news, and fans reacted online:
