Rihanna’s $25M Documentary is Almost Here

Details for R9 are still up in the air, but at least we finally have the documentary.

Navy, rejoice! The long awaited, $25 million Rihanna documentary is finally coming to Amazon. Exact details are still tentative, but the film will be available for streaming sometime in the summer of 2021.

Directed by Peter Berg, production for the film first began in 2015 as one of Film 45’s first projects. The “Battleship” director has since then worked on films surrounding issues in the sports industry as well as other notable projects. According to Berg however, the reason production for this particular project has been going on for some time is due to the beauty mogul’s tight knit schedule.

“She’s a remarkable woman, who every day seems to grow and branch out into new businesses and new endeavors at a rate that it’s almost hard to keep up with. So every time we think we’re going to finish the movie and put it out, she does something like start a fashion line like Fenty, or her lingerie line, or her skincare line,” he stated.

The documentary, appropriately titled “Rihanna: Volume 1” will be a two hour “unfiltered look into Rihanna’s life and how she’s ascended to become a global icon,” according to an official statement. It will also feature about 1,200 hours worth of footage, while taking viewers on “a journey through private insights into Rihanna’s personality and humor, philosophies on work, family and love that are both moving and inspirational.”

“The Rihanna doc is something I’ve been working on with her for almost four years now,” Berg stated in an interview. “Amazon’s gonna release it summer next year, sometime hopefully around the Fourth of July. It’s been a really epic journey, the past four years with her.”

While there’s yet to be a trailer, the film is highly anticipated by fans and admirers alike. VMagazine reports “what Rihanna chooses to share is usually worth our time (whether that be music, or off-the-cuff Twitter shade).” Although we still don’t know what the deal surrounding R9 is, at least we’ll have the documentary.
