There’s not many instances in life that actually justify the use of the term “finally”, but this does. Robyn has finally returned to the music world with “Missing U”. It marks her first solo track in nearly eight years, since 2010’s critically acclaimed Body Talk and acts as the first single from her forthcoming studio album. Thankfully, it was worth the wait.

Robyn is capable of mastering many different styles of pop, but she has perfected the classic “crying on the dancefloor” trope, with songs like “Dancing On My Own” and “Call Your Girlfriend” beautifully capturing the loneliness and complications of love like no one else, atop pounding electronic beats that provide emotional catharsis. “Missing U” finds her within the same territory, but without the same relief.

"‘Missing U’ is a song about this trippy thing that happens when people disappear, it’s like they become even more clear and you see them everywhere,” the singer said in a press release. And it's clear the past is haunting her. The twinkling synth-pop goodness of “Missing U” is a welcome return that re-establishes Robyn’s place in today’s music landscape, which has gone under some undeniable changes since 2010. But she’s also changed.

No longer is Robyn experiencing loss and loneliness in real time and working toward relief. Rather than building itself up, “Missing U” tones itself down as it goes on and comes to an abrupt end, not leaving us with a way to move forward. But there is a small light to be found. The song also acts as a little message to her fans, as seen with the release of a mini-documentary that captures Robyn re-connecting with them at a club night in her honor. It'd be hard not to miss anyone after eight long years.

As usual with Robyn, the beauty of "Missing U" lies within its universality and her ability to connect people through pop. Dealing with loss of any kind is aggravating, and Robyn is right at our side, delivering the perfect soundtrack to cry to. Listen to the track and watch "Missing U - A Message To My Fans" below.
