Since establishing her namesake label Ru by Rupal a little over two years ago, designer Rupal Banerjee has been on a mission. A frequent go-to for stylish celebrities like Tinashe, Kehlani, and more, the young creative is intent on carving her niche in the industry through a unique perspective on gender, femininity, and sexuality. Now, Banerjee has taken her quickly rising label to the next level: New York Fashion Week.

Looking to her Indian heritage and one-of-a-kind motifs as inspiration, the designer’s Fall/Winter 2022 collection was full of wearable separates and slinky, asymmetrical silhouettes. As with prior showings, loud color ways took centerstage while utilitarian fabrics—denim, sheer mesh, and more—made the collection wearable for the everyday

Presenting her Fall collection as a part of the MEFeater x Galentines runway show, Banerjee was in the energetic company of a host of emerging designers, rappers, and creatives alike. Anchored by the backdrop of the city’s famed Gotham Hall, Banerjee’s streamlined vision and intent on crafting must-have, thoughtful pieces was on full display this season.

Fashion-wise, the designer revitalized brand signatures—embellished mini skirts, skin-baring dresses—while also heading in new sartorial directions with sharp tailoring and flowing outerwear pieces that arrived in the brand’s signature, bold color palette.

This season, Banerjee again proved her knack for trendy, must-have pieces that are sure to turn heads. Coupled with her multi-faceted perspective, the LA-based designer is surely one to watch for the foreseeable future.
