Saint Laurent unveiled its Spring/Summer 2022 collection with an exquisite presentation in Venice, Italy. The show opened with a model walking on water while the sky gradually changed colors during dawn before moving to the main set: a kaleidoscopic mirror structure surrounded by and filled with green plants, some hanging from the construction’s ceiling.

Models seemed to glide through the structure, all to an epic ‘80s-synth-inspired soundtrack. The collection is marked by the label’s signature minimalist-driven elegance. Delicate pieces, such as the lace long-sleeve shirt with a high ruffled collar, are balanced by bolder details, like the extra tall platform boots or the heavier buckle shoes. 

Overall, the lineup feels light, with flowy designs enhanced by wind effects and stunning camera work during the presentation, such as the cape presented in black and yellow versions, the red velvet blouse, or the floral shirt, which almost looked like a balloon.

Many of the looks were presented with a deep V-shaped chest, complemented in some cases by a ruffled texture that added to the idea of movement. Vests were presented in floral black-and-white patterns and denim. 

Jackets were adorned with silver lower and cross brooches, with matching accessories adding a rock’n’roll, underground mood. Sleek straight-cut pants shared the space with softer fabrics, such as the fuzzy sweater. 

Another highlight is the purple suit with a metallic effect, complete with a matching vest; the material was also featured as a bold, nearly holographic coat. A bright blue ensemble was also a point of attention in a lineup made up of mostly black and white designs. 

The large-scale installation that hosted the show, officially called “Green Lens,” was made by artist Doug Aitken and specially commissioned by creative director Anthony Vaccarello for Saint Laurent. The structure is located on the island of Isola Della Certosa and is meant to be both a living experiential piece of art and a destination where visitors are invited to explore and be inspired. 

The idea is to create a connection between the natural, botanic landscape and our future, and how both can harmonize and exist in balance. As part of the Biennale of Architecture, the artwork will be accessible until the end of July as a fully immersive environment that reflects the plants, the sea, and the sky, providing fluid inspiration. 

“Green Lens is a living artwork. It is both an artwork, installation and stage. It’s like a lighthouse, that one can journey to and have a very personal experience, while it also transmits light, ideas and questions,” Aitken said in a press statement. “A focal point that allows all of us to share our ideas and visions for the future post-Covid…a celebration and inquiry into the future.” 

“Saint Laurent’s cult iconography always combined creative disciplines across art and fashion,” Vaccarello said in the same statement. “Through those collaborations I want to merge different fields’ artistic visions in a unique artwork.”
