Sam Taylor-Johnson is Finally Bringing an Amy Winehouse Biopic to the Big Screen
After years of trying to get this film off the ground, Studiocanal and Taylor-Johnson are making this rumor a reality with Back to Black.
Amy Winehouse is a name you never forget. She broke into the music world with songs such as Rehab and Back to Black and brought a sound that stood apart from the rest. Her sultry jazz style and her North London twang were enticing. Coupled with her iconic style and wild child personality, Winehouse was a force to be reckoned with. Now, Sam Taylor-Johnson and Studiocanal are bringing her story to the silver screen with a new biopic.
An Amy Winehouse biopic has been a Hollywood rumor for quite some time. Several attempts have gone to development, such as Lotus Entertainment’s rendition starring Noomi Rapace, but none have moved past that stage. Although A24 received praise and an Oscar for their 2015 documentary Amy, the desire for a biopic still lingered. Now, Taylor-Johnson steps away from the world of Fifty Shades of Grey and into the life of the late singer. The new film will show Winehouse’s journey from an ordinary North London girl to a Grammy award-winning artist. The film will cover the star’s battle with drugs and alcohol, which took her life in 2011.
According to Deadline, Matt Greenhalgh is writing the screenplay, and Alison Owen, Debra Hayward, and Tracey Seaward are producing with Studiocanal.
Having the full support of the Winehouse estate, Taylor-Johnson is moving steadily along with production. The actress who will play Winehouse has not been announced yet, but the search will begin in the coming weeks.
