A-COLD-WALL* founder Samuel Ross brought handmade craftsmanship to the classic Timberland boot for his second collaboration with the brand, as part of the ‘Future73’ collective series.

Ross created two pieces, first interpreting the original boot as a minimally-designed 6-inch Zip Boot in a ‘Jet Black’ colorway—made with regenerative leather and featuring side-zip closure and stacked lugs for added traction.

“This collection is the return of craft, the return of family ateliers and the notion of apprenticeship, which needs to be protected,” shares Samuel Ross in a statement. “This is why we chose to make a lot of this capsule in Italy and to bring these hand techniques which you can’t just replicate.”

The second footwear piece is a new ‘Dark Sapphire’ iteration of the Timberland Heritage 3-Eye Lug silhouette, featuring a durable ripstop upper, weather-resistant GORE-TEX lining, and a stacked sole.

Future73 is a team of creatives paving the way for fashion and fine art’s future, named after the original Timberland boot made in 1973, who are each designing their interpretations of the Timberland boot and providing their vision for the future of the brand. 

Aside from Ross, the team includes artist Nina Chanel Abney, Opening Ceremony founder Humberto Leon, CLOT founder Edison Chen, designer Christopher Raeburn, and textile designer Suzanne Oude Hengel. 

Ross also looked to Timberland’s apparel archives, releasing pieces including a Chore Coat in ‘Dark Sapphire,’ a Padded Vest in ‘Black,’ an Overshirt in ‘Rus Oxide,’ a Cargo Pant in ‘Black,’ a Sweatshirt in ‘Forged Iron’ and ‘Volt Blue,’ and a Sweater in ‘Moonscape.’

Pieces, such as the Chore Coat, were hand painted using a variety of pigments, as well as overheated and distorted to make each piece unique. In this sense, imperfections become signals of craft and artisanship.

The second Timberland x Samuel Ross Future73 Collection is available on August 29 and can be found in retailers worldwide and on timberland.com.
