The major trends we’ve seen over the past year – pleated skirts, sweater vests, cut-out clothing and playful midi dresses – are nothing new to Sandy Liang. Schoolgirl-inspired designs, with an unmistakable edge, have been a hallmark of her career. The Resort 2022 collection is no different.

Liang’s reworking of classics, and of her own signature style, keeps her collections fresh without straying too far from her roots. With looks ranging from toned-down and classic, to rebellious combinations showcasing her imagination and flair. 

The staple collegiate pieces within the collection are undeniably the grey sweater vest dress and black mid-thigh length pleated skirt. Paired with an oversized leather blazer and a matching cropped blazer, respectively, these looks are somewhat tame.

But Liang easily highlights their versatility by pairing them with unique pieces: the dress, layered over a blue button-up shirt and a floral print zip-up vest, the skirt with a sweater vest layered over a cut-out shirt. Elevating the schoolgirl aesthetic to a more punk status.

Each look is paired with the same glossy black loafers and white ankle socks, an ode to a school uniform many wish to forget. Yet, in this collection, you can keep reminiscing

Patchwork and exposed seam are woven in artfully with dresses showcasing the style. The spliced pink and white dress, almost appearing as if two different dresses were mashed together in some sort of sewing mishap, captures these trends artfully. And certainly does not look like a mishap, but rather like an elevated party dress straight out of a fantasy. A slightly more toned-down version of these looks can also be found in the red floral dress.

Continuing to include current hot trends, the puff-sleeved sheer midi dress, with ruffled accents lining the sleeves and the bottom of the dress, evokes a spunky sort of elegance. With early 2000s inspired sheer pieces also making a major fashion comeback, this collection plays with the idea in a fun and edgy way. 

Oversized fleece and mini skirts also make an appearance. What would seem like a casual look in fact plays to Liang’s creativity and accessibility as a designer in a playful and spunky manner.

With 23 pieces, Liang shows her own growth and versatility through her pieces. Not by reinventing, but rather reimagining her own personal design style and aesthetic.
