Sergio Hudson Revitalizes the ’90s with Dynamic Fall/Winter 2022 Collection
Supermodels Beverly Johnson and Veronica Webb made energetic runway cameos.
Fashion loves a good reference. From vintage motifs to nostalgia-inspired set design, nowadays, designers are looking to the past to guide our ever-changing future. This season, Sergio Hudson’s Fall/Winter 2022 collection was no different—a star-studded cast strutted their stuff down the runway like only ’90s supermodels could.
Amongst that enigmatic group were supermodels and fashion icons Beverly Johnson—the first Black model to cover American Vogue—and Veronica Webb—the first Black model to sign a major cosmetics contract. The pair received a roaring applause from the crowd who were, in true ’90s fashion, craning their necks above to get a look at the elevated runway.
Fashion-wise, the eclectic collection produced a bevy of sexy, unfussy separates that coincided with the overwhelming energy of the crowd and thumping background music (of course, Beyoncé dominated the collection’s upbeat soundtrack.) Starting out with a fashionable slew of cheetah printed looks, the wide ranging collection transitioned into a master class on color: halter dresses in neon yellow, skirt sets in baby pink, and power suits in deep green proved that Fall style doesn’t have to be drab.
Quiet tailoring took center stage throughout the collection, too, while matching sets and party-ready silhouettes proved Hudson’s knack for merging nostalgia with modern desirability. Not only referential silhouette-wise, models energetically walked in pairs, a clear nod to the effervescent runways of ‘90s Chanel, Versace, and more. Too, the upbeat tempo of the models and the music was a stark, and welcomed, departure from the stone-cold expressions and mechanical walks that dominate today’s runways.
Along with oh-so ’90s references, new ventures this season included body-con knit dresses and lingerie-inspired evening wear that meshed perfectly with the designer’s sleek, top-notch tailoring. Whatever occasion you may be dressing for, Sergio Hudson has you covered.
Since outfitting Vice-President Kamala Harris and former First Lady Michelle Obama, Sergio Hudson has cemented himself as one to watch in American fashion. The creative’s ability to craft not only desirable, well-fitted outerwear but also to immerse himself in the styles of the past is what sets the designer apart. Hudson doesn’t need to look to the future—or the Metaverse—for inspiration. Rather, his designs perfectly encapsulate what we all need right now: clothes that make us feel good.
