Shakira and JLo to Headline This Year’s Halftime Show

Making history at the Super Bowl.

Jennifer Lopez and Shakira are officially scheduled to headline Super Bowl’s 12-minute halftime extravaganza, and the duo is going to be making major history with this performance. Both JLo and Shakira have referred to the show as a very important moment for U.S. Latinos, and they see ut as an opportunity to convey a message of strength for women and the Latino community as a whole.

The two will be breaking up the action between the two teams competing this coming Sunday—San Francisco 49ers and Kansas City Chiefs. The action will take place at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, which is notable given Miami’s recent emergence as a cultural hub and a global destination has been credited in large part to Latinos who settled in the city over the past fifty years.

This is going to be a major event for the Halftime Show, which has recently been criticized for its choices of performers, and the performers, in turn, have been criticized for quietly supporting NFL during a time of controversy. “I think it’s a very important moment for our community, for the Latino community in this country,” Lopez said in a press conference. “The Super Bowl is a very American event, as American as it can get. It will also be a reminder of the heritage of this country, which is one of diversity, and that’s what we will be celebrating on Sunday,” Shakira explained.
