Skateboarder Lacey Baker Shares Their Fave Queer Anthems
The X Games Minneapolis isn’t ready for all these queer BOPS!
Lacey Baker is regarded as a skate hero. As a queer person and advocate, they’re a breath of fresh air for a sports community that has slowly, but surely, become more inclusive. Baker will compete on August 1st at the X Games Minneapolis, where they’ll be a face for the queer community in skateboarding and, hopefully, a winner. Who knew the X Games was such a musical place too? The Games have doubled as a concert series that runs alongside the competition with artists like Diplo, Wu-Tang Clan, and Incubus performing. In celebration of all the fun music next weekend, Lacey made a playlist filled with all of their favorite queer anthems.
Lacey broke down every choice they made for a playlist, which you can listen to below:
I’ve created a playlist inspired by songs that have impacted my queer lil heart over the years. Heavily influenced by skateboarding, queer skate community, and gay icons in general, this playlist is created to be listened to in order and will take you on a journey through my musical inspirations over the years. Hope you enjoy!
Le Tigre – Deceptacon (Album: Le Tigre)
My first time hearing this track was back in 2003 when Rick McCrank used it for his skate video part in Yeah Right! I watched this video every single day of my childhood. I was 12 at the time and completely unaware of the left-wing political messaging behind these music projects. Le Tigre remains one of my favorite bands because of what they have created for Women and LGBTQ communities over decades.
Pookie and the Poodez – Boy (Album: Pookie and the Poodez)
This is my number one favorite track from Cher Strawberry’s first music project entitled Pookie and The Poodlez. Cher wrote and recorded all these songs in her bedroom. She is the epitome of queer punk rock and has largely inspired my own musical journey. I listened to these tracks every day going to and from work when I lived in LA back in 2016. What an honor to know someone who’s so unapologetically authentic. Take notes people!
Hercules and Love Affair – Blind (Album: Hercules and Love Affair)
Blind is an absolute BANGER. Anohni’s vocals transcend beauty and I was lucky enough to use this song for my skate video part in the skate video entitled ‘Gizmo’ created by Nike SB. I knew from the beginning that I wanted this song for my part; it fits so beautifully with the way I skate. It meant a lot to use a song created by such a beautiful queer voice. Of course, Tyler Smolinski did a fantastic job with the editing!
Scissor Sisters – Let’s Have A Kiki (Album: Magic Hour)
If you know, you know.
Lady Gaga – Born This Way (Album: Born This Way)
I am a lover of pop music and happen to be one of Lady Gaga’s biggest fans. When this album dropped I physically could not turn it off. In light of queer anthems, this song is essential.
Kim Petras – Heart To Break (Single)
A hit from a trans pop star pretty much says it all. This song is so much fun!
Carly Rae Jepsen – Gimme Love (Album: Emotion)
This is my favorite track off of Carly’s album, Emotion. Carly is a gay icon and this is another album I could not turn off. I’m obsessed with Carly! I got stoked too when I discovered Dev Hynes produced a song on the album.
Tegan and Sara – Living Room (Album: If It Was You)
What’s a gay playlist without a little Tegan and Sara? This was the first Tegan and Sara song I ever heard and has remained my favorite track all along. Tegan and Sara are embedded in the path to my self-discovery and hearing this song now is so nostalgic. I was a 17-year-old baby gay when I had the albums So Jealous, If It Was You, and The Con on repeat.
The Replacements – Androgynous (Album: Let It Be)
This song holds a special place in my heart. Brian (Anderson) made me aware of this band a few years ago — obviously, I was missing out! How did I not discover The Replacements??? He sent me this song when we were first becoming friends; he said it made him think of me. Brian is so sweet and this always takes me back to the budding of a beautiful friendship. The song is iconic.
Patrick Wolf – Together (Album: Lupercalia)
I am a huge fan of Patrick Wolf. Lupercalia and The Magic Position are two of my favorite albums from his body of work. He’s such an incredibly talented human and this song is gorgeous.
Blood Orange – Chosen (Album: Cupid Deluxe)
Last but not least, Chosen by Blood Orange. This song is beautiful and brilliant. Dev Hynes is an absolute genius – I get shook to the core every time I play this song. Headphones on with no distractions is the best way to experience this one, it takes me away every time. All the feels.
