Sunset Brings the Spirit of Studio 54 to West Hollywood
Ian Schrager, co-founder of the legendary Studio 54 has a new iconic dance floor for you.
The creative mind behind New York City’s legendary club, Studio 54, is now directing a new underground club—literally below ground. Ian Schrager is the creative director of Sunset situated beneath The West Hollywood EDITION. Designed for multiple experiences, the club offers a cocktail bar, lounge, and private room—all under a densely packed ceiling with 400 disco balls.
Attracting LA’s elite and colorful club kids from all walks of life, Sunset was conceptualized by culture connoisseur Ben Pundole, VP of Brand Experience at EDITION Hotels, who has worked with Schrager since 1999. Pundole was educated at London’s infamous Groucho Club before establishing his career in NYC with Ian Schrager and Morgans Hotel Group. Pundole also enlisted Zen Freeman for production, known for his DJ career and nightlife spaces. Freeman is responsible for Sunset’s programming, having worked previously with the likes of Chanel, Tesla, LACMA, Vogue and Calvin Harris.
The venue opened with a star-packed night in November 2019, with performances by Chaka Khan and DJ Harvey. Shiny guests like Janelle Monae, Ru Paul, Lenny Kravitz, Diplo and Samantha Ronson were welcomed in the hotel’s grand lobby to get a first look at the stunning new Sunset Boulevard property.
The Sunset Strip destination is open on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights. Weekends at Sunset promise strong musical programming, with sets by renowned DJs like Bonobo, Soulwax, Q-Tip, and Samantha Ronson. If you couldn’t make it to one of those nights or just want to peep the sets, Sunset broadcasts its weekly events line-up to chosen ‘Friends of Sunset’ via WhatsApp, and releases DJ mixes on SoundCloud.
With a state-of-the-art d&b audiotechnik sound system and live music capabilities, the space features textured plaster walls with black oak flooring and a mix of rich velvet seating equipped for bottle service. Sunset at EDITION has a complete billiard table, but its main attraction is at the top center of the room—a mirrored disco ball art installation by Ian Schrager Company, executed by Guerin. It was designed with over 400 varying-sized disco balls, made by the last remaining disco ball manufacturer in the USA, Yolanda Baker. The DJ booth wall is lined with 4,000 curated 12-inch classic and collectible vinyl records.
The Sunset Room, the room below the room, offers an intimate space upholstered in rich green velvet and warm oak wood wall paneling complete with a custom bar, offering guests a unique and intimate experience—reminiscent of British 19th-century private clubs.
You may have missed out on the glorious days of Studio 54, but Sunset may be the next revival.
