Following the tragic death of Virgil Abloh in 2021, the fashion community was wrought with not only grief, but fear, realizing that the fashion industry would never be the same. Hailing from just outside Chicago, Virgil’s roles as both the artistic director of Louis Vuitton menswear and the CEO of Off-White allowed him to meld the worlds of streetwear and high fashion- a feat that had never been done before. Asserting the value of Black creativity in every professional venture that he took, Virgil is not only a fashion legend, but a trailblazer for Black individuals in fashion.“There could only ever be one Virgil,” says Kamara. “He was constantly innovating and thinking ahead and he left us a brand that can reinvent itself, grow, and stand the test of time. I feel the responsibility for him and for everyone who has worked, loved, worn, and believed in Off-White.”

Four years ago, Ibrahim Kamara met Virgil Abloh via Instagram DMs, and the two quickly became creative partners in crime. Becoming Virgil’s regular stylist for Louis Vuitton and Off-White fashion shows and campaigns, Ibrahim came to know the late designer as more than a business partner, but a friend. Today, the Sierra Leone-born creative director, stylist, and journalist is both the Editor-in-Chief of Dazed, as well as Off-White’s new creative commander. Through toying with the idea that fashion exists beyond our world, Ibrahim Kamara launches Off-White into the Space Age.

Looking like a space relic in and of itself, the show’s set design is composed of sand, rocks, and a reflective sphere smack dab in the middle of the event. Walking the show, fashion royalty like Naomi Campbell and Adut Akech strut proudly through the rubble. The opening looks are a series of black designs, each featuring show-stopping metallic-outlined holes. While the details are subtle, they demand attention in the mirrored space.

Following these looks, an array of colors make their way down the runway in the form of distressed knits, modern mini and maxi dresses, and space-appropriate jumpsuits. While a few of these one-piece garments are accessorized with harnesses, the one that stands out against the crowd is a head-to-toe metallic number, featuring black details under the arms and around the hands. “This collection marks the beginning of a new path, inspired by world-building,” says Kamara. “It envisions something yet to exist. Moon-surfing daydreams and star-gazing thoughts are at the heart of our evolution. Working on this collection, I found myself and my point of view in a universe that is true to me. It’s punk, sexy, romantic, and inspired by our modern lives.”

While the clothes were fit for galaxy-wandering humans, the accessories were downright alien-like. For eyewear, Off-White presented a slender design that mixed old and new frame trends. Keeping colors minimal, the brand presents a goggle-like cut for all your intergalactic travel plans. Jewelry was all about the earrings, asserting that circular styles are here to stay; featuring glass-like, pin-wheel, and honeycomb-reminiscent designs, Off-White brings fashion to the face.

Everything in this runway show was designed for galaxy-hopping, even the beauty. From washers dispersed throughout the hair and face to metallic manicures, these beauty looks exuded shimmer. While some looks featured silver brows, others focused on black, glossy eyelids. As it relates to body adornment,  Off-White leaves no Space stone unturned, asserting that more is more.
