Taylor Swift Surprises Fans With ‘Folklore’

‘Folklore’ will be Swift’s eighth studio album and arrives not even a year after ‘Lover’

Taylor Swift is releasing a surprise album and accompanying music video tonight at midnight.

“Folklore” will be Swift’s eighth studio album and is made up of sixteen original songs exploring her whims, dreams, fears and musings. The entire album was written and recorded in isolation, due to the coronavirus pandemic. Living in quarantine and debating on when to release the album, Swift decided to go with her gut and surprise fans tonight.

“Before this year I probably would’ve overthought when to release this music at the ‘perfect’ time, but the times we’re living in keep reminding me that nothing is guaranteed,” Swift said.

Later today, Swift plans on releasing a music video for “Cardigan,” a new song on the album. Despite the coronavirus pandemic, the music video was filmed with a live cast and crew. In a statement, Swift noted that everyone on set wore a mask and the entire production was overseen by a medical inspector.

In celebration of her eighth studio album, Swift is temporarily offering fans 8 deluxe CD covers and 8 deluxe vinyl covers. Each CD and vinyl will have original cover art and photos. The limited-edition covers will only be available until July 31st. A physical deluxe edition will include one bonus track, “The Lakes”.

Although Swift wrote and recorded the music in isolation, she was not alone in producing the new tracks. In a Twitter post, Swift gave thanks to Aaron Dessner and Bon Iver who co-wrote songs on the album. Jack Antonoff was also given praise as being part of Swift’s “musical family” as he has collaborated with Swift on many past projects.

“Folklore” arrives not even a year after Swift’s last studio album, “Lover”, which dropped last August. Fans can pre-order the album now or wait until the album and music video drops tonight.
