Teamlab to Open Immersive Art and Sauna Experience in Tokyo

The groundbreaking exhibition alternates saunas and cold baths to place visitors in a trance state.

International art collective teamLab uses art to explore our relationship to technology, the natural world, and one another through immersive installations. Interdisciplinary collaborators from the fields of art, architecture, programming, and more join forces to create unique experiences for lucky visitors. The collective has announced plans for a new art experience in collaboration with TikTok. This time, there will also be a sauna component, making it one of the more physically involved teamLab projects so far. The exhibit is called teamLab Reconnect: Art with Rinkan Sauna and will run in Roppongi, Tokyo from March 22 – August 31, 2021.

teamLab Reconnect places visitors in a sauna trance.

Through the use of saunas and cold baths, teamLab aims to open visitors’ minds and induce a trance state, altering their perception of the art. It all sounds trippy, and the art itself reinforces this; one of the new works is called “Supernature Phenomena” and appears to transcend the laws of nature, also working to shift viewers’ perception, even after they step outside the space. Other works, such as “Proliferating Immense Life,” and “Array and Spiral of Resonating Lamps,” are interactive and respond to viewers. You can get a sense of the featured works in the video below.

The immersion extends beyond the exhibition space; TikTok has partnered with teamLab on an augmented reality experience titled “Every Life Survives in Fluctuating Space,” available to TikTok users in Japan. The work is available through TikTok’s camera, and it features flowers that bloom and adjust to real-world surroundings.

The exhibition opens as Tokyo begins to slowly lift some of its COVID-19 restrictions, but the space still follows all social distancing and ventilation protocols. Tickets are available for purchase here.
