Just one listen of Mafalda’s entrancing dark balladry is all that’s needed to get sucked into her world. The singer-songwriter grew up in London but is now based in New York, her music drawing from the best of both worlds. Her voice is undeniably soulful and emotive, not totally unlike British sensations Sam Smith and Emelí Sande, yet there’s a dark and calming edge to songs like “Don’t Let Go” that scream New York. She seems like the kind of girl you could talk to for hours at an East Village bar, but don’t be surprised if she has her overnight breakout moment tomorrow—it’s only a matter of time.

For our Teenage Dream series, we took Mafalda to Coney Island and her favorite New York haunts to both relive her youth and capture the rising artist in her natural element.

How did you spend your summers as a teen?

In my mother's hometown, the beautiful Mallorca.

When you were a teen, what did you dream about becoming when you grew up?

A musician. I always wanted to work in music.

What type of music were you listening to as a teen?

Dido, The Strokes, Destiny's Child, Norah Jones, Sugababes, Razorlight and Coldplay.

Did you have good taste in fashion during your teenage years?

Definitely not as cool as the kids now.

Is youth important? If so, how?

Youth moves culture.

What's your impression of Coney Island?

It was fun! I grew up in London and it reminded me of a place we used to go a few hours away from the city, Hayling Island. They have a fun fair there.

What's one piece of advice you wish you could tell your younger self?

Don't doubt your passion & music really can be your profession

If you could spend your summer anywhere/doing anything, where would you be and what would you do?

My summer jam is still Mallorca because that's where I write my best songs and my grandparents’ piano is there.

Did you like Disney as a kid?

Who doesn’t? I still sing The Little Mermaid songs.
