Two masters of art and culture collide to showcase the evolution of Lagerfeld’s designs and his prominent impact on the fashion industry.

Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty
The Met Fifth Avenue in the Tisch Gallery

Exhibition: May 5 to July 16, 2023
Gala: Monday, May 1, 2023

Unmasked and unhindered, the iconic works of Karl Lagerfeld are set to be showcased and celebrated at The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s 2023 Costume Institute Exhibition, Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty. Paying homage to his iconic work and expansive six-decade long career, the exhibition will celebrate his notable process, from his comprehensive sketches and drawings to his highly acclaimed garments that have forever imprinted the course of fashion culture. From May 5th to July 16th, the exhibition will be on full display – alongside the infamous Met Gala, which is set to transpire on May 1st this upcoming year.

Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty will trace the evolution of approximately 150 works, exploring the progression from two-dimensional sketches to three-dimensional garments. The pieces on display will span his career as Creative Director of the Karl Lagerfeld, Chanel and Fendi houses, among others. With an emphasis on his passion for drawing and the use of form as his primary vehicle for creative expression, the exhibition will present his pieces “through lines” with dualities and metaphors melded throughout.

Pier Paolo Righi, Ceo of Karl Lagerfeld, shared, “Karl was a lover of multidisciplinary arts, and it’s the highest recognition for his work to be presented in such a monumental exhibition at The Met’s Costume Institute. As custodians of Karl’s legacy, we aim to bring his passion, intuition, and inexhaustible creativity to life in everything we do. We cannot imagine a more poignant or meaningful way to celebrate his colossal achievements — both the enduring impact he’s had on fashion and how it’s shaping the future.”

Coinciding with the announcement, the house of Karl Lagerfeld will introduce 77 exclusive editions showcasing Karl’s highly iconic design; the white shirt. Each one-of-a-kind statement piece has been individually printed with Karl’s original sketches and hand-signed with its limited-edition run number. Accompanying the shirts is a unique collector’s box, which includes a keepsake art print of Karl’s atelier in Paris. Furthermore, the entire purchase price from the sale of each shirt will be donated to The Met. The 77 limited-edition pieces are now available exclusively at Karl Lagerfeld stores in Paris (Boulevard Saint-Germain) and Milan (a pop-up shop via Manzoni), plus on Karl.

The Met Gala:
It’s confirmed on May 1st, this year’s edition of The Met Gala will commence. The renowned New York event will attract the highest of mega-watt celebs, notable connoisseurs, and everything in between. For the first time ever, in tandem with the Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty exhibition, the theme will be centered around – yep, you guessed it – the one and only Karl Lagerfeld. So, what exactly does that entail? How would one dress on theme? We’ll just call a spade a spade; it means … Chanel, Chanel, and more Chanel. Oh, and also perhaps the notable houses that Lagerfeld has assisted, such as Balmain, Patou, Chloé, and Fendi.
