The Ballet of MM6 Maison Margiela

Enter into the divine world of MM6 Maison Margiela 223

MM6 Maison Margiela invites you into the sacred space of the artistic processes behind performance. The SS23 collection is crafted with the intent of freedom within mobility—drawing inspiration from the ballet. The Auditorium di Milano Fondazione Cariplo hosts the SS23 collection alongside an entire orchestra, and ballet troupe. The performers are en route to begin their rehearsal of the avant-garde masterpiece—The Rite of Spring.

Featuring the MM6 Salomon Adv Skin 5 running vest—an ongoing collaboration between Maison Margiela and the French outdoor sports brand, there is an emphasis on flexibility and mobility throughout the collection.“These garments are not ready to wear—they are ready when worn.”

Reverse scoop neck jumpers, and thigh-high boots symbolize the brand’s emphasis on the relationship between the avant-garde, and movement. Monotoned materials of cotton, and ribbed knit, alongside square-toed pointe shoes are used in order to emphasize the interchangeable relationship between the performance and the rehearsal. Knitted, or draped silhouettes that cinch the waist, paired with baggy trousers create an interesting play between rehearsal and street style.

There is a worn quality that gives the garments an archival feel to them. You are witnessing an ever-changing narrative. Some pieces are more tattered and muted, while others are a bright white. Neutral colors such as blush, black, and ivory pay homage to the roots of ballet costumes.

Drawing inspiration from the movements, and the dress code which makes up ballet— the collection confronts the jaunt and attractive qualities within the artistic process. The process becomes the performance.
