The Met Gala Will Take Place This September

Fashion’s biggest event is returning in a two-part celebration beginning this fall.

With an end in sight for COVID-19, all our favorite things are coming back—best of all may just be the Met Gala, which we missed dearly this past year.

Andrew Bolton, curator at the Costume Institute, announced the return in conjunction with Anna Wintour earlier today. The Met Gala will be held in two interconnected Costume Institute shows on the theme of American fashion.

Part One, “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion” will take place this September after New York Fashion Week. It will aim to center around contemporary American designers, while Part Two, “In America: An Anthology of Fashion” is set for May 2022, making up for lost time in the month the event is traditionally held in.

Celebrity hosts are yet to be announced, though The New York Times has reported that Tom Ford and American poet Amanda Gorman have rumored involvement.

The last Met Gala we had, hosted by Harry Styles and Lady Gaga in 2019, debuted the “Camp: Notes on Fashion” theme, seeing a plethora of wild, flashy outfits on the pink carpet. With this year’s theme announced and COVID protocols now a standard, we’re aching to see what kind of looks the event will turn out—and who will host its iconic return.
