“The Queen’s Gambit” Is Going to Be Turned Into a Musical

Moves will be made on both the chessboard and the stage

Everyone’s favorite black and white board master, Beth Harmon, might need to start hitting notes while she’s making her plays. Because Netflix sensation “The Queen’s Gambit” is going to be making its way to the musical theatre stage.

Entertainment production company Level Forward acquired the rights to Walter Tevis’ novel on which the miniseries was based. Level Forward has been responsible for stage productions of “Oklahoma” and “Jagged Little Pill,” and has also been behind feature films like The Assistant

Level Forward CEO Adrienne Becker and producer Julia Dunetz released a statement, saying, “It is a privilege for Level Forward to lead the charge of bringing The Queen’s Gambit to the stage through the beloved and enduring craft of musical theater. The story is a siren call amidst our contemporary struggles for gender and racial equity, and we’re looking forward to moving the project forward.”

“The Queen’s Gambit” has been on an award-winning streak recently, having picked up multiple Golden Globes and Critics Choice awards for Best Limited Series and Anya-Taylor Joy’s performance in the lead role. The show released in October of 2020 to major acclaim and attention, even leading to a surge in interest towards the game of chess.

It will be interesting to see how the story’s serious historical nature will translate to musical numbers. Considering the multitude of quiet moments that abound “The Queen’s Gambit,” given the several intense games of chess, adding theatricality to it might be a challenge. However, if “Hamilton” is anything to go by, quiet moments could prove effective on the Broadway stage. Any further details on the making of the musical are yet to be revealed.
