Hiroshi Fujiwara, the designer behind Moncler Genius’s latest collection, is a multihyphenate of uncustomary proportions. Designer-DJ-producer-street style tastemaker is a lengthy title, yet Fujiwara steps into it with an offbeat cleverness reserved for the cutting-edge. That is, after all, what Moncler Genius, the luxury label’s collaborative branch, is in constant pursuit of.
One of the longest standing members of the Genius project, Fujiwara has established himself as a maestro of multidisciplinary art, probing the depths and niches of popular and subculture, and his latest menswear collection for Moncler does just that.

Beginning with the archetypal pieces of the everyday wardrobe ー parkas, jackets, car coats, worker jackets ー Fujiwara skillfully introduces an array of subtle embellishments. The functionality and technical expertise integral to the Moncler ensemble remains intact, as everyday pieces are rendered deceptively prosaic.

Graphics dominate, and every detail of the collection speaks to Fujiwara’s far-reaching cultural references. Embossed logos and numerical codes ground the line, while hyper-playful Y2K graphics take casual wear to playful dimensions. Cartoon kitten and bunny creations by Korean illustration studio Nayeon & Rang play alongside stanzas of philosophical quotes, embroidered on sleeves and fronts.

Sporty nylon parkas and varsity jackets reminisce on the Americana silhouette, and classically tailored car coats and workwear jackets supplement distinctly British codes. Classic Moncler signifiers are revisited, with the Maya2 and Everest2 jackets reworked in ‘50% lighter’ iterations for the incoming spring weather, and in a moment of sartorial esotericism, slick black nylon, in matte and shiny finishes, is pierced by beloved existentialist, Nietzche’s, pragmatic witticisms ー ‘Without music, life would be a mistake’ ー and Aristotle’s metaphysical profundities ー ‘There is no great genius without some touch of madness.’
Well said.
