Theophilio’s Newest Collection Takes on Y2K

Bringing nostalgic favorites to the forefront

On September 14th the young, Brooklyn based  fashion brand Theophilio by Creative Director Edvin Thompson showed their  Spring/Summer 2023 collection at New York Fashion Week. Thompson’s show was entitled “Homecoming” and drew on the designer’s experience living in a variety of places,”This collection is an ode to all the places I called home. Inspired by the iconography of all of these great cities, Theophilio is a wearable biography.” Thompson reflected.

In 2021 Edvin Thompson received the CFDA Emerging Designer of the Year award. “Homecoming” is the Jamaican-American designer’s first collection since receiving the award and his second NYFW runway show. The collection is reflective of Thompson’s time in Atlanta, New York and Jamaica. Edvin Thompson showed rhinestone T-shirts bearing “I Love TP” referencing the iconic “I Love NY” design.

Strappy stiletto sandals and leather newsboy hat call to mind the Olsen sisters in their 2004 movie New York Minute.“Homecoming’” was clearly inspired by 90’s and early 00’s ushering in the Y2K aesthetic for the coming year. The trends of low-rise pants, micro minis and eye-catching textiles are here to stay if Theophilio is to be consulted.

A large feathered headpiece shown in black, yellow and green acknowledged the designer’s time in Jamaica. Sequin bikini tops in rastafarian and giraffe print also acknowledged the designer’s love of the island country. Theophilo showed clever color-blocked leather pants as part of their menswear. The runway was graced by an ethnically and bodily diverse cast of models while a large LED screen in the background played footage of one of the brand’s campaign shoots in Jamaica, finishing off the show leaving everyone longing for the continuation of summer.
