Through Sound and Space, an Enigma Returns: Yves Tumor Album Review

“Praise A Lord Who Chews But Which Does Not Consume; (Or Simply, Hot Between Worlds)” marks the experimentalist’s thrilling return with their fifth album.

In splendidly chaotic, ever-consistent Yves Tumor-fashion, Praise A Lord Who Chews But Which Does Not Consume; (Or Simply, Hot Between Worlds) opens with a scream. A scream that quickly descends into “God Is a Circle,” the opening track of the album, just as quickly as the experimental artist descends into, what one can only describe as, transcendental sonic travel.

Ever-creative and ever-expanding, Tumor’s fifth album unsurprisingly invades across genre borders, moving through variations of rock, alt-pop and electronic music with the confidence of someone who, frankly, doesn’t care to stop at the musical border checkpoint.

With the strength of their hypnotic lyricism and otherworldly arrangements, the project is equal parts disorder and equal parts cohesion, somehow rounded out by each track clashing with the next. “Parody” builds with haunting vocals and warm, almost luminous, instrumentation, while Tumor throws questions into the void on “Operator.”

No song is quite like the other, like at all – but honestly, that’s exactly what fans of Tumor are hungry for. Something far out. Something unafraid to be strange. To raise eyebrows. To raise goosebumps.

As the formal, full-length follow up to the critically-acclaimed 2020 album Heaven To A Tortured Mind, the new album was set free to the feverish anticipation of listeners waiting to see where this enigmatic music machine went next.

Whatever you might want to call this destination, one thing is certain. Tumor’s aesthetic and identity, which they fasten themselves to so effortlessly are unmistakable. From the frantic breaths to the singer’s almost-sultry tone, this is a Tumor project through and through. Their sonic spectacle, if you will. And like any good spectacle, this album will find its way out of your headphones and into the real world.

Yves Tumor heads out on the global To Spite Or Not To Spite tour, where it will open at Coachella in April. Potentially with a scream.
