Tiffany & Co. recently unveiled the coveted Vince Lombardi trophy, presented to the winning NFL Super Bowl champion team each year. This year’s Super Bowl LVI trophy premiere solidifies the luxury jeweler’s fifty-fifth year created the special award. Tiffany & Co.’s notable craftsmanship is apparent amongst the trophy’s physicality with its distinctive intricacies. Its production, which started as part of the 1967 Super Bowl, highlights Tiffany & Co.’s ingenuity through a singular professional athletics triumph. Its 1967 conceptualization attributes to Tiffany & Co.’s former Vice President Oscar Riedener, who outlined a basic design amidst a meeting with former NFL commissioner Pete Rozelle.

A few years later, at the start of a new decade in 1970, the trophy was renamed after Green Bay Packers coach Vince Lombardi, whose team won the annual championships’ first two games. Lombardi became an inductee of Fordham University’s Hall of Fame and the NFL’s Man of the Year during this time. He also received induction into Pro Football’s Hall of Fame and Green Bay Packers Hall of Fame in 1971 and 1975, respectively.

As of fifty-five years ago and Oscar Reidener’s first sketches, the twenty-two inches tall and approximately seven-pound sports emblem is made at Tiffany and Co.’s Rhode Island workshop. Its master artisans utilize archaic silversmithing methodologies, including spinning, chasing, hand engraving, and polishing, combine for its finished emergence. Its composition is a regulation-size football at the trophy’s top and solely formulated with sterling silver. This process estimates around fourth months until finalization. The winning team then receives engravement after the event.

Tiffany & Co.’s artistic creations include awards from other professional sporting championships, including the National Basketball Association Larry O’ Brien Championship Trophy and the MLB’s and United States Tennis Open championship trophies. The leading jewelry retailer also recently debuted their “Return To Tiffany” Fall 2021 collection in collaboration with streetwear brand Supreme in November of last year.

Super Bowl LVI is set to take place on Sunday, February 13th, at Los Angeles’ SoFi Stadium and is available to watch on NBC along with streaming on Peacock. The Los Angeles Rams and Cincinnati Bengals will compete for this year’s title with a star-studded roster of halftime show performers, including Dr. Dre, Eminem, Mary J. Blige, Snoop Dogg, and Kendrick Lamar.
