Tod’s Spring/Summer 2023 Collection Puts Quality First

The Italian luxury brand prioritizes high-quality materials and minimalist styles.

Womenswear brand Tod’s is embracing the power of high-quality essentials. With luxurious leather and well-crafted staples, the brand’s Spring/Summer 2023 collection pulls together a line of classic looks. In a fashion landscape of maximalism and overbearing prints, the simplicity is utterly refreshing.

Tod’s Creative Director Walter Chiapponi certainly pays attention to detail. Each garment within the collection is perfected to the minutiae, with artisanal and handmade details. For Tod’s, this perfection in simplicity is about capturing the ‘Italian soul’ of the brand. That meticulousness is their so-called Italian Flair, connecting the current collection to the brand’s history.

Ultimately, this collection is about high-quality goods. Leathers are buttery and clean, becoming almost like fabric in their softness. Each look is thought out independently, being structured and styled to create a cohesive vision. Everything from the buttons to the belts is made of only the best materials, giving Tod’s its luxury name.

Chiapponi is able to break away from this simplicity and minimalism in the styling of the models, introducing some innovative pairings of classic garments. Whether it be a men’s jacket with a leather slip dress or trousers with a cinched bustier, Chiapponi certainly has a knack for fresh combinations.

In one of the collection’s stand-out looks, the model is seen sporting a buttoned leather coat with oversized sleeves. Layered under the base of the coat is a leather knee-length skirt, also buttoned straight down the center. The combination of jacket and skirt is cohesive, well-styled, and looks luxurious to the eye. It thoroughly represents the Tod’s brand: classic but well done.

It’s easy to look at Tod’s SS23 runway show and say that it’s too simple, too basic. Still, with an inflatable Moschino collation and nostalgia amuck, maximalism may be overdrawn. To see a designer embrace the beauties of minimalism, perfecting the every day, seems necessary. It’s this simplicity that makes Tod’s stand out.
