Tom Ford Reimagines the ’80s at NYFW

The runway show gave us a fun, modernized spin on the best elements of the past

Sequins and zebras and crocodiles oh my! The SS23 Tom Ford runway show brings together classic elements that make people fall in love with the glamor of New York Fashion Week. Big hair, high heels and lots of sparkles made Tom Ford’s show on September 14th a must see. An homage to a reinterpreted 80s, Ford pulled inspiration from the best of the iconic era.

Models strutted their stuff down the runway to upbeat music, including 80s classic Take On Me by A-ha. Structured shoulder padded suits and low waisted womens trousers modernized the 80s power suit in soft, metallic hues and matte pastels . Unlined bustier under jackets made in the same fabric were sported under blazers by the models.

Edgy, cool but not gouache, Ford’s attention to detail and tailoring pulled together a series of mix-and-match pieces that we can’t wait to include in our wardrobe. Sequin stars and hearts embellished leather bomber jackets and shortened trousers. Both the male and female models rocked alligator embossed belts with western-inspired silver buckles.

The menswear was no afterthought. An electric pink suit and tie made a heavy impact, validating that our current love for all things pink is not limited to womenswear. The men also wore sheer dress shirts and fishnet tank tops. Monochrome black zebra print and a full leopard print suit were a fun and daring play on menswear.  Styling was an important element in the show, hair was braided and worn in voluminous mountains of curls, short haired male and female models dawned gelled faux hawks.

Gigi and Bella Hadid walked wearing cut out sequined gowns, closing the show alongside a golden bridal-inspired gown. The modeling pair were not the only major names in attendance; Anna Wintour, Madonna and Ciara Wilson all sat front row wearing head-to-toe Tom Ford.
