When he isn’t starring on the hit Netflix show, 13 Reasons Why, Tommy Dorfman is a man on a mission—using his platform to help those in need and supporting the causes he cares most about. Dorfman is collaborating with NYC illustrator Paul Tuller (known for designing the famed Chechnya shirt) to make a fundraising shirt in response to the ruling issued to approve gay conversion therapy in Brazil. The t-shirt features a strong message with the words “Cura Gay” imprinted on the front, meaning “Gay Cure”. The word “Cura” is crossed out, to signify that there is no “Gay Cure” because homosexuality cannot be cured.

“When I heard the news of Waldemar de Carvalho issuing a ruling to approve gay conversion therapy in Brazil, after it was banned for nearly 20 years, my heart broke. So many of my fans and supporters live in Brazil and it pains me to see them not feel legitimized for who they are and who they are attracted to. I felt an instant calling to do something, so I reached out to Paul, who designed a shirt in support of LGBTQIAPK people in Chechnya, and we came up with this design together. This idea that you can “cure” homosexuality is appalling and simply not true. There is no Cura Gay (gay cure), there’s just Gay. Or not. Or however you identify, and nobody should have a say over something so personal and inherent. I hope this shirt resonates with people and we’re able to raise a shit ton of money for the GGB to resist this ruling,” Dorfman said in a recent interview.

All of the proceeds from sales of the $28 t-shirt—on sale on October 17th—will benefit Grupo Gay de Bahia, a non-profit LGBTQIAPK organization based in São Paolo, Brazil.
