Tommy Hilfiger has teamed up with the Mercedes AMG Petronas Formula One Team for a capsule collection that has been co-designed by streetwear brand Awake NY. Launching just ahead of the Miami Grand Prix, the collection has been designed as a mixture of Tommy Hilfiger’s classic preppy style and Awake NY’s streetwear sensibilities, both of which have been infused into the creation of pieces inspired by the Mercedes Formula One Team.
“I have been an F1 fan since I was a kid, and we’ve been breaking conventions in our partnerships with the sport since the ‘90s” shared Tommy Hilfiger. “With this collaboration, we wanted to continue to innovate with both design and an inclusive spirit to create a bold new perspective for the next generation of race-goers.”
Angelo Baque, Founder of Awake NY, has had a lifelong appreciation for Formula One and Lewis Hamilton. Baque’s touch in the collection is prominent; his streetwear design language is used as a means to make elevated pieces that speak to the sport of racing as well as the culture of Miami.
“My visit to the Tommy archive sparked the nostalgia of my youth and inspired much of my approach to this collection,” said Baque. “My desire was to authentically interpret streetwear and Americana. Never in a million years did I think this Ecuadorian kid from Queens, NY, would be designing pieces proudly worn by Lewis Hamilton, George Russell and Mercedes-AMG F1. Seeing Tommy, Lewis and myself working together on this project is important for the younger versions of ourselves to understand representation matters.”
The project does not just stop at the creation of a collection, it is also a means to give back to the community. Through the People’s Place program, an initiative under Tommy Hilfiger that aims to give opportunities to underrepresented communities in the creative industry will use the collaboration to partner with Creatives Want Change, who will invite BIPOC participants to the race in Miami this month.
“Change is an inevitable part of both sport and life. As a team, we understand the importance of embracing this on and off the track to continually innovate, inspire and tackle the challenges presented to us,” shared CEO and Team Principal of the Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS F1 Team, Toto Wolff. “We’re proud to celebrate these shared values through this collaboration; not only creating an iconic collection but by supporting and highlighting creators from underrepresented communities.”
The collection itself features seven gender inclusive styles that pull from archival racing aesthetics, elevated through the lenses of Hilfiger and Baque. Formula One fans and streetwear obsessives alike will find themselves more than happy with the selection of baseball jerseys, rugby shirts, tees, and polos, all of which feature co-branding from Tommy Hilfiger and Awake NY, as well as some of the pieces featuring graphics that state the drivers’ names and numbers along the back.
The collection will be available at Tommy.com, Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1, select Tommy Hilfiger stores and designated tracks over upcoming Grand Prix weekends.
