It’s Not a Phase: V Celebrate #WorldGothDay

For years, the aesthetics of subculture have adorned the pages of V.

Wake up, sheeple—today is #WorldGothDay. In case you missed it, or you’re foregone to that normie simulation we call mainstream society, the trending hashtag is flooding Twitter with black eyeliner and misfit pride, with many pointing out the subculture’s latent influence on fashion and pop culture (Westeros as high-Gothic inspo, anyone?). But as V history illustrates, so-called “goth”—i.e. a refusal to blend in, plus a penchant for romantic maximalism, no matter the weather—has always been part and parcel of fashion’s mandate. With clear eyes and black hearts, we look back on some of our best emo-inspired moments.
