Dreaming big was never on Rain Spencer’s worst fear list. Yet, her breakout roles in Good Girl Jane and The Summer I Turned Pretty flipped the script (pun intended) on her career, turning her into one of the youngest rising actors in Hollywood. The art of manifestation is not always easy to master, but even from an early age, Rain knew who she was and what she wanted. “I remember quite literally looking at one of the vision boards that I had made and getting emotional. Younger me would be proud! The most magical moments of my life, I still never see coming.”

A theatre kid at the core, Rain spent the beginning of her career on stage. “I started doing theatre when I was five, major roles like ‘Background Tree number 3,” says Spencer cheekily. “I always looked up to the big kids–the 18-year-olds with the leading roles. They were the coolest.” In just a short matter of time after delivering steely lines through her earlier work, Spencer was awarded Best Performance in a U.S. Narrative Feature at the Tribeca Film Festival for her outstanding performance as the titular character in Good Girl Jane.

But it wasn’t until Rain’s portrayal of her character Taylor Jewel in the hit series The Summer I Turned Pretty that audiences fell even more deeply in love with the novel-turned-show, and with her. “I always admire Taylor’s ability to bounce back. She doesn’t do it perfectly by any means, but she has good intentions. She’s very loyal and she is fiercely protective.” With the third and final season premiering on Amazon Prime on July 16th, one could only wonder which Fisher brother Rain is rooting for. “I remain Team Belly through and through,” says Spencer. “Whatever she wants to do, I support her.”

With Rain sitting comfortably in the frenzy of YA projects, her next coming-of-age film is one V cannot wait to see: Big Girls Don’t Cry—the directorial debut for Paloma Schneideman. “Her vision was very clear from the beginning, and I think we could all feel that. Big Girls Don’t Cry is such a special movie to me, and I can’t wait to see what Paloma does next.”
