V-ISITS: Four Seasons Astir Palace Hotel Athens

Greece’s most rewarding escape is closer than you think
There’s a peculiar rush that overtakes people arriving in Athens. Before they’ve even collected their luggage, they’re checking ferry schedules or short-haul flights, eager to continue onward to whichever Greek island currently occupies the top of their Pinterest board. It’s become almost instinctive: Athens is the layover, the islands are the destination.
Those in the know, however, have learned to linger.
Just thirty minutes from the city center, tucked onto its own pine-fringed peninsula along the unbelievably gorgeous (and arguably underrated) Athens Riviera, Four Seasons Astir Palace Hotel Athens makes a compelling argument that mainland Greece may, in fact, be the country’s greatest luxury destination—especially now that the islands, or at least the better-known ones, have become downright infested with tourists during much of the summer.

All 303 rooms, including 200 “regular” rooms, 42 suites, and 61 bungalows, face the Aegean. During my stay, someone mentioned that the sea outside never appears the same shade of blue two days in a row, which I found to be true all four mornings. One afternoon it glowed turquoise beneath a cloudless sky; by evening it had shifted toward a stunning, calming cobalt.
It felt like an appropriate metaphor for the hotel itself, where no two days here need resemble each other either. One day might belong to the spa, whose treatments borrow from centuries of Greek wellness traditions before sending you back out into the Mediterranean sun feeling as though you’ve reset your internal clock. The next might be stretched across one of the property’s three private beaches, interrupted only by another margarita arriving from Helios, the poolside restaurant. Another day can disappear entirely between long lunches, swims, afternoon cocktails, and the dangerous (but sublime) that you’ve looked at your phone perhaps twice.

The beauty of Astir Palace is that it never asks guests to choose between retreat and excitement. It offers both simultaneously, creating a bespoke experience that twists and bends to the guests’ ever-changing preferences.
Dining alone can occupy an entire itinerary. Pelagos, the hotel’s Michelin-starred restaurant, transforms Mediterranean ingredients into something fresh, delicious, and often unexpected in a country so beloved for its cuisine. Down by the water, Taverna 37 embraces the simple pleasures of Greek cooking, best enjoyed slowly with the sea and the sound of waves lapping only a few feet away. Mercato delivers polished Italian comfort, while the aforementioned Helios brings Latin American flavors and frozen margaritas to afternoons spent poolside. As evening settles across the peninsula, Avra becomes one of those rare hotel bars that’s less like an amenity and more like where everyone naturally gravitates, watching the last light disappear into the Saronic Gulf. Beyond the hotel itself, both Matsuhisa and Beefbar sit just moments away, making it entirely possible to spend several days eating remarkably well without ever leaving the peninsula.

For anyone whose version of relaxation includes movement, there is plenty to justify leaving your lounger. The tennis courts have become favorites of several internationally recognized players who happen to own homes nearby. Astir has always attracted people who value privacy as much as luxury. Watersports, fitness classes, coastal walks and quiet coves ensure that even the most energetic traveler won’t exhaust the possibilities.

And then there’s the shopping. Just a short buggy ride—or an easy walk—away, Astir Marina has assembled one of the Mediterranean’s most impressive collections of luxury boutiques. Louis Vuitton, Dior, Gucci, Bottega Veneta and Loro Piana sit alongside waterfront restaurants and gleaming superyachts, creating the sort of afternoon that somehow begins with “just browsing” and ends several shopping bags later. (Or in my case, truly, just browsing in the hopes that the classic Greek shipping billionaire provides me with the Athenian “Pretty Lady” treatment. A boy can dream).
Back in the room, however, all of that excitement disappears the moment your head meets the pillow. Four Seasons has long built its reputation on some of the most comfortable beds in hospitality, and Astir Palace happily continues the tradition. The sheets possess that impossible softness hotels spend years trying to replicate, the sort that convinces you another twenty minutes of sleep is somehow essential. Here, luxury isn’t only measured by Michelin stars or designer boutiques, but by how completely your body forgets the pace of everyday life. And for those as enthralled with bedding as I am, one can even purchase some of these items at the hotel spa to bring home as a perfect souvenir.
What I loved the most is that Astir Palace doesn’t force guests into a single version of vacation. It can be deeply restorative without ever feeling sleepy, endlessly social without becoming performative. It is just as easy to spend the day reading beneath an umbrella as it is hopping between restaurants, swimming in impossibly clear water, playing tennis, or boarding a boat.
The Greek islands will always deserve their mythology. But after a stay at Four Seasons Astir Palace, they no longer feel like the obvious choice. Sometimes the greatest luxury isn’t found after another ferry ride. But by all means, for those who prefer the islands, continue to venture out! Leave the mainland and its oversought splendors for the rest of us.
