Marvel- and DC-backed superheroes may have dominated screens as of late, but in March, wunderkind designer Christian Cowan showed his “Powerpuff Girls” collection, defending the pint-sized gang’s rightful place in the zeitgeist. In the 20 years since they were unleashed unto Cartoon Network, the trio, marked by short tempers and a coordinated, pastel-hued crusade for justice, has become an unlikely avatar for latter-day female tenacity—and a worthy sidekick for Cowan’s feminine maximalism.
In this animated photoshoot, Cowan’s collection, powered by sequins and feathers galore, enters the world of the wearable—spliced with a dash of 2D technology. Is it a bird? Is it a plane? It’s a GIF!
