Temperatures are finally cooling off as we enter the winter season. MM6 Maison Margiela and The North Face have collaborated on a capsule collection to keep you both warm and tastefully eccentric. The series of garments were unveiled at London’s Fall/Winter Fashion Week earlier this year and can now be yours.

In 1990, The North Face released the “Expedition System,” a number of detachable, layered pieces designed to withstand extreme weather conditions. These days, vintage “Expedition System” jackets are sought after on every corner of the resale internet, with 90s colorways (think cobalt, violet, bottle green, sun yellow and safety orange). Fear not, if you missed out, the tried and true staples just got a whole lot better. 30 years after its initial release, the “Expedition System” in collaboration with MM6 is updating its style and functionality with slightly more avant-garde silhouettes as a result of the Maisons’ signature circular patterns, yet adhering to the vibrant color palettes the all-terrain brand is known for.

Serving the best of nostalgia, shoppers can secure an elevated remix version of The North Face staples that they might have even sported growing up. OG styles such as the Nuptse Puffer, the hooded Himalayan Coat, and the cape-style Mountain jacket are making their comeback debut, as well as the Denali jacket, composed of recycled fleece, now takes a new form with its ability to be worn as a coat dress or sweater.

Not only are these apt to guard against fluctuating weather conditions and style customization, but with it’s recycled down insulation and the triple-zipper system creating the a`1bility to add or lose a few of the collection’s layers, armholes, and even sleeves with ease.

For a chic and cozy finish, the collection taps iconic Margiela and The North Face motifs. The Nuptse scarf delivers symbiosis which is a stand-alone statement garment. Tapping Margiela’s iconic effect in the alpine mittens, which are split at the thumb, or merely an additional layer on a cold winter’s day. While the circular clutch and backpack pay hommage to The North Face’s Base Camp Duffel.

To test drive the capabilities and aesthetics of the unique coalition, V tasked four photographers around the world with shooting the collection. Models from New York to the Middle East posed under flashbulbs in the offbeat outwear, draping themselves against trees and across beaches.

Cádiz, Spain

In Cádiz, Spain photographer Noel Quintela and stylist Samia Geobellina partnered for a moody, nighttime shoot to capture what Quintela called a “beautiful metamorphosis.” Models were perched in trees and atop sandy hills akin to avian creatures. With a crash landing, Quintela chose the Valdevaqueros dunes to depict a foreign traveler’s spaceship stranded in the middle of nowhere. “I normally feel attracted to dystopic, unsettling or surreal situations so the idea of working around the unexpected as a concept sounded really fun to me,” he explained.

Rockaways, New York

In Rockaways, New York photographer Marie Tomanova and stylist Dean DiCriscio paired up to shoot a sun-kissed beach getaway. Though the collection—bold, joyful and unexpected, an invitation to the “ultimate adventure” as the photographer describes it—is mainly intended for cold weather conditions, though great style is a year-round endeavor. The dreamy landscape of the Rockaway Beach location was inspired by “the colors and shapes of the collection” which Tomanova wanted to “put in contrast with the roaring ocean and the sunset sky.” She continues, “It is a story of two beautiful souls wandering the shores of NYC, sharing moments and growing a friendship. I wanted the open sky, the never-ending ocean and portray the love and connection between people where only the sky is the limit.”

Düsseldorf, Germany

In Düsseldorf, Germany photographer Ignazio Lozano and stylist Martin Olaciregui teamed up to capture the collection in a variety of natural spaces, “where the garments were familiar with the environment,” said Lozano. One model is paired with the collaboration’s puffer, while others match vests with bright orange gloves and rocky terrain, a unity between somber forestry and the hard rock of the great outdoors, highlighting the collection’s “removable pieces by layers to help combat extreme weather conditions.”

Har Zin Mountain, Israel

At Har Zin Mountain, Israeli photographer Yaniv Edry and stylist Aryeh Lappin worked together on a group photoshoot. In the desert, the only truly challenging climate of the bunch, models arm themselves with a dusty truck and a few water bottles. Chunky sunglasses, colorful hair beads, and high-heeled boots complement the collaboration’s eccentric shapes. Edry got the sense of “something spacey and infinite” because of the round motifs of the collection, which resonated with him and evoked “the feeling that we are on some star on another planet.” [Edry] would sum up the collection as a “journey into the unknown.”
