It wouldn’t be talking out of school to say that the final look of Vaquera’s SS19 show, which took place inside an actual school, included one of the most creative riffs on proportions seen in recent fashion week memory: an LSD-laced nostalgia trip, the show's finale was a graduation-blue satin gown, propped up by a Marie Antoinette-style hoopskirt, and accessorized with an outrageously large cap.

The finale's achievement—to take something normally associated with adolescent ungainliness and exaggerating its ungainliness even further—was exemplary of the extreme, infectious confidence of the show, which was styled by Emma Wyman. Mixing artifactual signifiers with art-nerd nostalgia (see: gussied up floral-print football pads), the show's post-grad-meets-post-punk theme flipped the script on both high school and fashion hierarchies. Even the planting of a New York Times fashion journalist in the cast, which elicited delight from the crowd, added an extra layer to the revenge-of-the-nerds plot. Cool-kids table, eat your heart out.
