Versace Autumn/Winter 2022: Looks for the Modern It Girl
Donatella Versace’s reign continues with a vampy, retro collection, presented with the help of Gigi and Bella Hadid.
Shadows of models fluttered across the giant room dividers that morphed the Versace runway into a high-fashion maze, giving the audience a taste of the show they were about to witness. But it was more than just a fashion show: with thumping music, bright red floors, and eventually, strobe lights, Donatella Versace created the chicest club in all of Milan with her Autumn/Winter 2022 presentation on Friday night.
The show itself was clubby and slightly futuristic, while the collection featured several nods to iconic Versace looks from the 90s, like modern replicas of 1995’s bustier tops and corsets. The collection also featured Versace’s take on the Y2K fashion trend, with colored sunglass lenses, low-rise denim, and beaded and chained tops.
Beyond the inspiration taken from decades past, the Autumn/Winter 2022 collection offers classic looks for the modern It Girl, complete with tweed blazers, latex pants, platform heels, and lots of pearls. The star-studded presentation featured some actual It Girls, like both Gigi and Bella Hadid (as should be expected at any Versace show), Emily Ratajkowski, Precious Lee, and Adut Akech.
True to the Versace name, the collection included countless prima-donna bags, golden belts and chains, and giant pearls, from drop earrings to rings. The collection also featured a pointed-toe, triple-buckle version of the iconic Versace platform heel, worn on nearly every model.
Skintight looks littered the show, from bustier dresses to latex pants and thigh-high boots. And while many looks were fitted, others were marked by distinct oversized tailoring, particularly in the outerwear. The show began with monochromatic black looks, then slowly incorporated two popular hues we’ve seen in Milan: purple and red. Moving into brighter looks, we were introduced to two other key colors, bubblegum pink and moss green. Versace also designed several herringbone jackets, and a few tweed blazers to cap off the collection.
Models looked chic and vampy with big, smudged eye looks (á la everyone’s favorite muse, Julia Fox, who was in the audience), and deep red lipstick that added a layer of glamour and a definite “Donatella Versace” feel to the presentation.
This year’s collection built upon the glamour of last winter’s collection, which featured bright colors and detailed paneling, as well as platform boots. This year’s look overall is brighter, shinier, and maybe a bit more seductive, created for a post-pandemic world.
