Vivienne Westwood’s SS22 Collection Is Here to Save Our Souls

Vivienne Westwood’s new line has nautical inspirations for the summer.

Who doesn’t want to dress like a pirate? Vivienne Westwood’s Spring/Summer collection, Save Our Souls, reimagines her 1998 line Tied to the Mast, pirate-wear for today. Her new collection looks at the broader idea of sailing and English culture starting at the Elizabethan era and what came after it. The line also takes inspiration from Couturier Redfern, a British designer who started in 1849.

But the collection isn’t just about looking into the past. The concept of “save our souls” applies to issues today such as gun legislation and climate change. To provide a more eco-friendly collection Westwood used a special wool from regenerative farming along with recycled materials. Save Our SoulsĀ is about saving people today from the ongoing destruction of our world. “I demand government cooperation, Save Our Souls, SOS,” the label said.

Westwood went deeper into explaining her thoughts behind the collection saying, “I was tied to the mast and the clothes underwent a sea change. On a sailing ship when the tempest arose, everything had to be tied down or be washed away; the women and children were brought on deck and tied to the mast for safety of their lives as the sea engulfed them.”

Nautical influence presents itself through stripes (usually blue and white or orange and white) mimicking the styles of bygone sailers. This often has a twist, presenting itself as plaid and houndstooth. The oceanic influence also comes out through a series of pearl necklaces.

Additionally the Elizabethan influence is demonstrated through Westwood’s use of corsets, which have recently come back into fashion. Her patterning also mimics renaissance painting, while adding a modern twist.

But the collection isn’t just about the past. Save Our Souls is full of tailored suits and dress lengths that would make Queen Elizabeth shudder. There are also several accessory items with “SEX” written on them.

This line is far more subdued than Westwood’s past work. The collection is minimalistic for Westwood’s standards, with less layering than she often uses. Not to fear. She still uses her heavy patterning and accessorizing.
