Volta Atelier Makes Leather Bags For The Conscious Consumer
The Brazilian-based brand uses upcycled leather hand-stitched by Haitian refugee women to create unique, sustainable pieces.
Volta Atelier bags are for the bold personalities, the modern lifestyles—and the conscious consumers.
Produced exclusively in Brazil, the brand crafts accessories using 100% leather discarded by the leather goods industry in Brazil, and evolved from the upcycled leather concept towards using social-oriented labor.
In Portuguese, “volta” means “to give back,” and that’s exactly what the brand does. In partnership with a Migrant Care Center NGO based in Brazil, Volta Atelier’s bags are artisanally crafted by Haitian refugees trained to hand-stitch the leather with care and earn a source of income from home.
Every bag is handcrafted, unique, and tells a story—the story of upcycled scraps of leather, and the Haitian women seeking refuge in Brazil who made them.
“During [the artisans’] training, we learned about unimaginable difficulties they went through, forced by their circumstances to move to a foreign country, to communicate in a new language,” said Volta Atelier founder Fernanda Daudt, who has more than 15 years of experience in the fashion industry. “So, we want our consumers to become part of this, and to be inspired by the story behind each item. That is why each product comes with a tag signed by the artisan who had hand-stitched it.”
The ethically produced bags are made to be worn out, to be a simple statement piece for everyday use—whether it’s a neon-printed, shiny stunner or a sleek, take-your-breath-away monochrome bag, each accessory is completely one of a kind.
Volta Atelier has showcased in the past five editions of New York Fashion Week, and was shortlisted by the Green Product Award, which honors the best innovative and sustainable products in the international market, in 2019 and 2020.
The leather bags are handcrafted, one-of-a-kind, and ethically produced exclusively in the beating heart of Brazil. Whether discreet and demur, or out-of-the-box, loud and proud, the brand exemplifies the modern, social, on-the-go lifestyle of contemporary men and women. A little eccentric, unquestionably sophisticated, and 100% versatile.
Volta Atelier retails in the United States, Mexico, Puerto Rico, and recently opened a point of sale in Tokyo, Japan.
