The final week of August marks the official end of summer – and with this week’s new releases, the season is going out with a bang. Former Disney darlings Miley Cyrus and Selena Gomez are synching up their releases for the first time in decades in a sweet nod to nostalgia. Ashnikko’s highly-anticipated concept album is finally out, while artists like Conan Gray, YUNGBLUD, and Audrey Nuna are releasing electrifying singles as they continue to embark on new musical chapters. So add these new releases to your summer playlist while you still can!
Miley Cyrus, “Used To Be Young”
The always iconic Miley Cyrus is back with her latest signature stripped-down, emotional ballad. On “Used To Be Young,” Cyrus reflects on all of the versions of herself – honoring her past, taking pride in her present self, and looking toward her future with optimism. In the accompanying music video, a teary Cyrus sings into the camera while wearing a vintage-looking Disney shirt under a red bedazzled bodysuit, a nod to the early stages of her career portraying Hannah Montana. As a continuation of her Endless Summer Vacation album “Backyard Sessions” film on Disney+, the single is accompanied by an interview special on ABC.
Selena Gomez, “Single Soon”
When Selena Gomez announced “Single Soon” – her first release since last year’s “My Mind & Me,” the accompanying song from her Apple TV+ documentary of the same name – fans didn’t know what to expect. The track is reminiscent of Gomez’s classic fun pop hits while simultaneously representing the start of a new era in both her career and personal life. The track is paired with an even more enjoyable music video packed with iconic references to Sex and the City – the famous I’m sorry, I can’t – don’t hate me Post-It – and campy fashion looks.
Ashnikko, WEEDKILLER
Ashnikko’s debut full-length album is finally here – and the 13-track project surpasses fans’ highest expectations. The genre-defying concept album tells the story of a dystopian fantasy in a clever commentary on the environment and the evolution of technology. Featuring hard-hitting singles like “Worms” and “Cheerleader”, as well as a collaboration with Ethel Cain in the final track “Dying Star,” Ashnikko’s debut project checks all the boxes for an instant hit.
Ahead of her release, she sat down with V to chat about the creative process behind this project.
Conan Gray, “Winner”
Pop superstar Conan Gray is back with his latest single, “Winner” – an anthemic track about recognizing your own pain. With his signature vulnerable lyricism and a heart-wrenching powerful chorus, Gray is at the top of his game as an artist. His strong vocals layered over a dramatic instrumental buildup place this song at the top of his discography.
YUNGBLUD, “Hated”
YUNGBLUD continues a new musical era with his latest deeply personal single “Hated.” The lyrically poignant track delves into intense trauma and the freedom that comes with finding inner strength and looking toward the future. The song is paired with a strikingly authentic music video (directed by Sandeep & Chadrick).
AUDREY NUNA, “locket”
Rising artist and rapper AUDREY NUNA is back with her latest electrifying single “locket.” The mesmerizingly addictive track is accompanied by an incredible music video directed by the late Valentin Petit, who tragically passed away in an aircraft accident earlier this year. The track cements NUNA’s status as one to watch in the music industry as the 24-year-old confirms “locket” is part of a new body of work on the way soon.
Bktherula, “CRAZY GIRL P2”
Atlanta hip-hop star Bktherula is back and better than ever with an updated version of her song “CRAZY GIRL” from her project LVL5 P1 earlier this year. The artist joins forces with YoungBoy Never Broke Again to create “CRAZY GIRL P2,” an even more unapologetic version of the powerful breakup anthem fans know and love. The track is also paired with a music video mirroring the lyrics’ bold approach.
Zevia, “something i can’t do”
Rising singer-songwriter Zevia is back with her single “something i can’t do” – the latest of her signature heart-wrenching ballads with introspective lyrics delving into her mental health struggles. Her unique authenticity resonates with fans going through similar situations.
Olivia Lunny, “HEARTBREAK ON REPEAT”
Canadian rising pop star Olivia Lunny is celebrating self-love and independence in her new anthem, “HEARTBREAK ON REPEAT.” The vocal powerhouse is no stranger to crafting ethereal pop tracks, but on her latest release, she leans into an unapologetic mindset like never before, showcasing her versatility as an artist.
Jenna Raine, “Big Dumb Heart, Chapter 2”
Pop singer-songwriter Jenna Raine presents her long-awaited EP “Big Dumb Heart, Chapter 2” featuring four tracks including her viral single “It Is What It Is.” Along with the EP’s release, Raine unveiled a perfectly vibrant music video for “It Is What It Is,” mirroring the track’s upbeat and energetic optimism.
Rosie Darling, “Villain”
Rising indie-pop singer-songwriter Rosie Darling is back with the latest track on her forthcoming highly-anticipated debut album Lanterns, out Nov 10. “Villain” delves into complex themes of vulnerability and internal conflict after letting a relationship go rather than attempting to salvage it. The track showcases the songstress’ lyrical ability as well as her vocal prowess.
