V’s Top 10 Favorite VMA Looks From the Past
From Dennis Rodman to Lorde, the MTV VMAs have always stood out with celebrities wearing their most daring fashion choices.
The 2020 MTV Video Music Awards may look different from past years, given the pandemic has caused the show to be filmed at multiple outdoor venues. But with Keke Palmer as this year’s host and performers like Lady Gaga, Chloe x Halle, and DaBaby lined up among others, V can’t help but get excited for the 2020 VMAs on Sunday.
Until then, we rounded up some of our favorite looks from previous years, like Dennis Rodman’s shimmering tank top in 1995 and Lorde’s 2017 lavender colored, feather ball gown.
Courtney Love and Kurt Cobain, 1993
Maybe one of the most famous VMA looks of all time, Love and Cobain were effortlessly cool as a baby Frances Bean Cobain sat on Love’s hip.
TLC, 1995
On top of winning four awards at that year’s VMAs, the group made iconic for their hit “Waterfalls” went with all white and intricate detail for their red carpet look.
Dennis Rodman, 1995
Commonly known as the NBA’s most fashion forward player, Rodman always brought coolness off the court, too and the 1995 VMAs were no exception.
Sofia Coppola, 1995
Director Sofia Coppola embodied the ’90s essence without flaw that year in a sheer, vibrant purple slip dress.
Gwyneth Paltrow, 1996
The endlessly chic Paltrow matched the red carpet at the 1996 VMAs, and still managed to boldly stand out.
Lil’ Kim, 1999
At the VMAs of 1999, Lil Kim turned heads and left a mark on fashion history with one of the coolest outfits to have walked down a red carpet.
Iman and David Bowie, 1999
The 1999 VMAs may not have seen Bowie’s best get up (his Ziggy Stardust days can confirm that), but Iman stunned in a bright yellow corset dress joined by a beaded purse.
Aaliyah, 2000
Singer Aaliyah had a strikingly powerful beauty and voice, and the 2000 VMAs proved just that, from her look to her two awards that evening.
Destiny’s Child, 2001
Two years after “Say My Name” topped charts, Destiny’s Child matched in bright orange suede ‘fits that included fringe and blue beading.
Lorde, 2017
Lorde never misses a chance to wear something stellar, and in 2017 she got it just right with a lavender ball gown flowing with feathers.
