The legend of Lizzie Borden, the 19th century speculated outcast responsible for her father's murder, has been adapted for the silver screen several times over. The first trailer for Lizzie, the tale's latest film iteration starring Chloë Sevigny and Kristen Stewart, was released over the weekend.

Directed by Craig William Macneill, the upcoming biopic takes a deeper dive into the inner mind of Borden, played by Sevigny, and her love affair with maid Bridget Sullivan, played by Stewart. The trailer begins at the funeral service for Borden's father. An eerie calm makes its way across Sevigny's face as a male voice asks whether Andrew Borden had any enemies. After flashing to scenes of conflict between father and daughter, as well as intimate moments between Borden and Sullivan, the camera returns to the funeral, where Borden answers the anonymous man's question: "This is America, sir. Every man with a pulse has enemies."

Lizzie is slated to hit theaters on September 14. Check out the chilling first trailer below.
