If you’ve ever wondered what it would look like if Gaspar Noé, the Argentine auteur behind some of cinema’s most visceral scenes, directed a dance break, look no further than the just-debuted U.S. trailer for Climax. The forthcoming film, which was snapped up by A24 after it debuted at Cannes earlier this year, follows a young dance troupe’s descent into madness (and sickening choreography) at an acid-fueled dance party.

Shot by cinematographer and collaborator Benoît Debie (Enter the Void) in Noé’s signature style blending trippy surreality and gritty verisimilitude, the film features a largely new-coming cast and crew, from trans activist and DJ Claude-Emmanuelle to choreographer Nina McNeely. Sofia Boutella of The Mummy stars as the troupe leader.

The film joins a canon of female-driven dance flicks, including Honey to Showgirls. (A24’s logline describes it as a “satanic Step Up.”) But as with any Noé film, from his unflinching meditation on sexual violence Irreversible to the hallucinatory Love, the dancey disturbia promises to push audiences to the limit.
