Welcome To the “Renaissance” Era

Beyoncé’s seventh album is finally here.

Beyoncé’s surprise album, Renaissance, is finally here. The global icon announced the album on June 16, and fans have been counting down the days ever since. The new album is the first solo album Beyoncé has released since Lemonade. After 6 long years, fans finally can reveal her solo music once again, and see what Renaissance has in store.

Beyoncé gave the world a taste of what the sound of the new album would be with “Break My Soul.” The single incorporated heavy elements of house music and presented a new sound for the singer. The single quickly made its way to the top of the charts and had fans excited for what was to come. Now the world can finally hear the LPs other 15 tracks, and fully get immersed in the new world.

For Renaissance, Beyoncé has quite the feature list. Guests on the album include Grace Jones, Tems and BEAM, and Drake. The Dream, who previously collaborated with the singer on “Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It)”, is also featured.

The new album is very dance-heavy and shares messages of self-love and rocky relationships. In “Cozy”, Beyoncé celebrates herself saying “Comfortable in my skin / Cozy with who I am / I love myself, goddamn.” The album takes a turn with tracks like “Heated” and “Plastic on the Sofa.” In “Heated,” she says “If you keep playing with my heart, boy / I’m just as petty as you are.” Speculations are being made that the singer is referring to her rocky relationship with her husband Jay-Z like she did on Lemonade. For “Plastic on the Sofa”, she says “We don’t need the world’s acceptance / They’re too hard on me, they’re too hard on you, boy,” which some believe is about the public’s opinions of her marriage.

In a message shared before the album’s release, Beyoncé revealed that this project has been three years in the making. “This three-act project was recorded over three years during the pandemic. A time to be still, but also a time I found to be the most creative. Creating this album allowed me a place to dream and to find escape during a scary time for the world.”

After three years of keeping this album on the down low, hackers leaked the album online two days before its release. In addition to the leak, fans in France and the Netherlands reported that some media stores had the CD for sale early. The leak received backlash from fans on social media, and Beyoncé addressed the leak ahead of the album’s official release. She said, “I appreciate you for calling out anyone that was trying to sneak into the club early … we are going to take our time and enjoy the music.”

No matter how you listen, Renaissance is a must-add to your Friday morning playlist. Via a statement on her website, Beyoncé hopes “you find joy in this music. I hope it inspires you to release the wiggle. Ha! And to feel as unique, strong, and sexy as you are.”
