Another day, another well-being trend. Except the latest inescapable craze is not a “trend” at all—it dates all the way back to the Stone Age. Bone broth, which is having an inescapable resurgence, is rapidly increasing in popularity, and with good reason. Having already been a key component of ancient Chinese medicine, Greek and Roman civilizations, and Egyptian culture, these delicious and healthful broths have had proven benefits for our guts long before the word “hashtag” even existed.
To learn more about this culinary renaissance, V spoke with Health and Wellbeing Strategist Sinead McInerney about bringing the bone broth brand RIPE to Lisbon, Portugal, after its success in North America.
Who are some celebrities who’ve been raving about bone broth lately?
There’s truly been a growing trend of celebrities promoting the healing benefits of bone broth. Salma Hayek has been vocal about her love for broth as part of her wellness routine, and of course, the wellness queen Gwyneth Paltrow regularly shares her passion for bone broth supporting gut health. It was also Kobe Bryant’s pregame meal, carefully prepared for the NBA superstar. And with the influential Miss Kylie Jenner sharing her unique twists on bone broth via TikTok, I think so many more will follow. Stars are definitely embracing it because of its proven benefits for gut health, beauty, and overall wellness.
What are the benefits of drinking broth every day?
Drinking bone broth every day is like giving your body a full-on reset. It’s packed with collagen, which is great for your skin, hair, and joints. Plus, it’s a digestive aid, supporting your gut health, which is at the heart of overall wellness. The minerals in bone broth help to strengthen bones, boost the immune system, and support your body’s detoxification process. It’s a simple, nourishing way to stay energized and grounded throughout the day.
What are some of the ingredients and what do they do?
The ingredients in RIPE broth are handpicked for maximum impact. We use organic chicken bones, carrots, celery, garlic, onions, and a little cider vinegar to pull all the nutrients from the bones. Not to mention fresh aromatic herbs. The bones provide collagen and gelatin—key for skin elasticity and joint health—while the veggies add anti-inflammatory benefits and vitamins. The cider vinegar helps to extract minerals from the bones. Every sip is an invitation for your body to heal and rejuvenate.
What makes RIPE unique?
RIPE is unique because we don’t just make broth—we make broth with intention. It’s about sourcing quality ingredients and crafting each batch with care. We’re all about transparency, sustainability, and supporting your holistic wellness journey. We don’t believe in shortcuts or additives; just pure, nutrient-dense goodness that does right by your body and supports a circular economy. The expansion into Europe comes after a 7-year legacy in North America, which has proven over and over that delicious broth produces lasting results. I want to offer that same grounded, accessible wellness that people need—wherever they are.
Why does it make sense for RIPE to be expanding to Europe after being established in North America?
Expanding to Europe is a natural next step after the success in Canada, and soon, NYC. RIPE has always been rooted in the wellness movement, and after Alex came to Lisbon to teach broth workshops in my sister Sonia and my ‘Creating The Shift Yoga Retreats,’ we knew we had to work together and bring this product to Europe. The wellness community is thriving with the same hunger for clean, functional products. Toronto is where RIPE started, but Europe offers the perfect market to amplify that mission—especially in a place like Lisbon, where clean eating and gut health are high on people’s radars. It’s all about bringing a new routine to the people who are ready to embrace it.
Can you describe the process of making this broth?
Making ripe broth is a labor of love. I have sourced the bones from a local organic butcher in Lisbon. For the ripe signature Liquid Gold Chicken Broth, you have to start with high-quality chicken bones—and simmer them low and slow for up to 12-17 hours to extract all the nourishing minerals and collagen. It’s a meticulous process, but that’s what gives it the depth of flavor and the healing properties that make it so special. We add fresh organic vegetables and aromatic herbs to enhance the taste and nutritional value, then strain (and strain and strain) everything for a smooth, clear broth that’s ready to nourish you, inside and out.
The extra special step in ripe bone broth is that each jar has been made with such care and attention. RIPE Founders Alex & Isaac have been so helpful in directing me all the way from Toronto to ensure I got the recipe perfect!
Can you draw a comparison, for example, between broth and the ever-trendy Ozempic?
While Ozempic has been trending in weight loss circles, bone broth offers a much more sustainable and holistic approach to wellness. Ozempic works by manipulating hormones to curb appetite, but it doesn’t address the root cause of your brain fog or SIBO for example which would be gut health, immune function, and overall nourishment. Bone broth, on the other hand, is natural and accessible. It supports digestion, skin health, and even weight loss, but it does so by nourishing your body rather than temporarily curbing cravings or metabolism. It’s a slower burn, but one that supports your body’s natural rhythms.
If you are looking for a way to kick start your healing journey, there is a 14-day Heal Your Guts reset on my website which I curated to inspire you to build a routine which actually supports a lifestyle that you can maintain your goal weight. Not because you are restricting yourself from food but because you will be learning how to eat with intention and to fuel your body. And, of course, to move where and how you can.
What do you think the future for broth looks like? Might it be a new contender with coffee and tea for the mornings?
I have been doing broth over coffee for quite some time!
It is the perfect way to get around not hurting your hormones by drinking coffee on an empty stomach. I absolutely see broth becoming a contender in the morning wellness routine, alongside coffee and tea in Europe.
As people shift away from sugar drinks and caffeine-heavy routines, there’s a real opportunity for RIPE broth to step in as a nutrient-dense, gut-loving beverage to start the day. It’s soothing, warming, and full of benefits that set the tone for the rest of the day. I wouldn’t be surprised if people start reaching for their morning cup of broth just as easily as their coffee, especially as more people learn about the profound effects it has on their health and well-being. I have seen this shift with Broth pop up in Cafes all over Toronto since Alex brought it to our community and now I can’t wait to do the same in Europe.
