After playing a few of her original tracks to Katy Perry in the pop star’s living room, Cynthia Nabozny’s life changed, and drastically. Perry must have recognized in her what the rest of the world is slowly but surely awakening to—a uniqueness and charisma for pop music that feels as “cool” as it is quirky and endearing.

Having said several times that music served as a means of expression while growing up in Detroit’s suburbs, it’s no surprise that Cyn’s particular artistry is especially emotive, capturing and packaging her raw sensitivity in a relatable way. Titled Mood Swing, her debut EP (released on Katy Perry’s label, Unsub Records), is a testament to that.
