Y-3 Unveils Chapter 2 of Spring/Summer 2023 Collection

Y-3 defines their second release of SS23 as modeled after “Technical Effortlessness”

In the second chapter of their SS23 collection, Yohji Yamamoto and adidas are furthering their decade-long partnership by directing their attention towards the concept of “Technical Effortlessness.” While the last chapter of this season’s collection (released in January) focused on blending artistry with sportswear, this chapter is heavily inspired by traditional Japanese workwear garments that are emboldened by functional design details and silhouettes.

For the collection, self-referencing has been instrumental in the design process as the design team has revisited the legacy of Y-3 outdoor-ready and functionally-minded designs. The result of this research through the archives is present in garments designed with adaptable detailing; featuring fabric chording, snappable buttons, straps, and asymmetric silhouettes. The combination between sleek stylistic lines and steadfast functionality speaks to the underlying spirit that has consistently defined the collaboration between Yamamoto’s avant-garde isms and adidas’ classic sportswear pieces.

Defining the footwear offerings of the collection is the newly crafted Y-3 TERREX SWIFT R3 GTX, available in both high and low models in black and white. The shoe is almost aerodynamic in its contemporary design, crafted out of neoprene and leather, and finished with a waterproof membrane that calls for the shoe to be worn in a vast array of outdoor adventures. 

In the creation of visuals for Chapter 2, Y-3 is continuing its exploration throughout Japan, landing in a coastal location in collaboration with photographer Takashi Homma. The visuals have been inspired by Homma’s “New Waves” body of work, showcasing the collection on a breezy and romantically-hued Japanese beach. Here, the contemporary pieces from Y-3 sing in harmony with the calming natural environment.
